(I am asking this here because this may have something to do with Android's Push C2DM support or its Wifi Sleep Policy.)

Suppose I have this conversation in Facebook or MSN:

When I check my Instant Messaging app in my phone later why does it

  1. sometimes have all six messages,
  2. sometimes have only the green ones, or
  3. sometimes have none at all.

This happens in eBuddy, Go!Chat, Nimbuzz, Imo.im, Trillian, Friendcaster or IM+. Note that at least the first three of these support Google C2DM Push Notifications.

  1. Is this a bug or limitation of Facebook chat?
  2. Is this a bug or limitation of these Android IM clients? or
  3. Is this a bug or limitation of Android C2DM?

What's the solution here: Never turn off my phone? Keep Mobile Data active always? I never ever have this problem with my desktop IM clients.

Most chat clients do this on most platforms as they try to determine which clients you're actually using at the time. I don't think this is really answerable without knowing the protocol details, which isn't on-topic. – Matthew Read♦ Jan 6 '12 at 17:00

Hmm, I don't think so, at least not phrased as-is. If you wanted to post a version on Stack Overflow more oriented toward how the protocols work they might accept it, but it would need to more developer- instead of user-oriented. – Matthew Read♦ Jan 6 '12 at 20:41
