Every now and then I need to

 Messaging app > Menu button > Settings > Select ringtone > press the up volume button

to set the volume up because something (but what?) turn the volume down

How can I force the volume to stay up ?

It's hard to do it accidentally, it's not the ringer volume but the sms ringtone volume. My ringer volume is fine – Doud Aug 24 '12 at 20:20
