My up-to-date Galaxy Nexus exhibits this strange and annoying bug in the task switcher.

Normally it's supposed to look like the following:

But sometimes, for some reason, it starts greying out the app previews and it looks like this:

I didn't find a way to fix it except rebooting every time it starts messing up. What could be the problem and how can I fix this?

Are you sure it's not distinguishing recent apps from running apps? – Matthew Read♦ Feb 22 at 19:27
