I'm trying to root my HTC Desire with unrevoked and it's been showing the "Pushing Recovery... (4317184 bytes)" message for more than 20 minutes now. Is it normal?

Sounds like not. – roxan Nov 3 '12 at 15:22
Try un/replugging it. 4317184bytes are only 4.11MB, that should be a matter of seconds only. Unrevoked is sufficient for gaining root. If you want to install an aftermarket ROM: Depending on your model you need to install an unlocked hboot afterwards too (if you want to install CM and have a PVT4 model. See – ce4 Nov 3 '12 at 15:52
