What would be pros and cons of headsets versus speaker phones for in-car hands-free phone operation? Are there other solutions as well? Are features such as reading and dictating text-messages come built-in the device, come as an app, or can be both?

Primary phone in question has Icecream Sandwich installed, but are there any culprits against using older versions of the OS?

@theUg I'd suggest you take a look at our FAQ. As Liam correctly pointed out, this question falls into the category "not constructive": questions which lead to long discussions, asking opinions, being overly broad, polls, etc. are not welcome here, sorry. I think this is an okay question for this site. It's asking the comparative (and presumably objective) differences between possible solutions. It's not asking for a recommendation for a particular solution. – Al Everett Dec 21 '12 at 19:50
@AlEverett But I think that is still a discussion, and not really Android-specific (as yes, reading out and dictating text messages are features of the OS for some devices/ROMs and there are apps for it as well). – Matthew Read♦ Dec 21 '12 at 22:06
