I have a Samsung Galaxy S2 with ICS 4.0.3 installed. The phone is rooted. Since a while I get a message about a 129MB update. I suppose this is the update to 4.0.4, but I'm not 100% sure. When I try to install it, the following happens:

  • the update starts
  • alert that a reboot is needed, and after 10 seconds it reboots itself
  • the phone reboots
  • I see a white open box, a green android icon, and at the bottom a progression bar
  • before the progression bar is at 10% the screen goes black and it reboots
  • the phone starts up, I enter the pin, then get an alert: Cannot update firmware. Try again with Kies or go to Samsung servicecenter. (Roughly translated)

Is this a known problem? How can I fix this? Should I undo the rooting?

As you have rooted your phone, this might be due to the changed checksum of the system partition. The updates compares this with what it expects, sees a mismatch, and stops the update. But unless you quote the complete error message (or at least add a few more error details), it's hard to say for sure -- though it's the most likely cause IMHO. – Izzy Jan 7 at 13:25

there should be a file called recovery.log foundin the recovery partition, mount that and pull down the file and paste it in here or use pastebin :) – t0mm13b Jan 7 at 16:41
I'm not sure how to mount the recovery partition, and I don't see a /recovery directory, only a recovery.rc file. – rxt Jan 7 at 19:47
