My situation is strange. I can open any website, like, in my emulator's web browser. However, when I use adb shell to connect to my emulator and try to ping any other IP or website, it always fails.

I'm running the emulator on Ubuntu under VMWare. Why am I not able to ping other hosts?

Sounds like you need to forward the IP Address from the host to the emulator for adb to work...please read this Google SDK on Emulator under topic Emulator Networking – t0mm13b Jan 9 '13 at 16:06
