My situation is strange. I can open any website, like google.com, in my emulator's web browser. However, when I use adb shell to connect to my emulator and try to ping any other IP or website, it always fails.

I'm running the emulator on Ubuntu under VMWare. Why am I not able to ping other hosts?

Is NAT enabled on your VM? Firewall issue? –  t0mm13b Jan 9 '13 at 3:37

Sounds like you need to forward the IP Address from the host to the emulator for adb to work...please read this Google SDK on Emulator under topic Emulator Networking –  t0mm13b Jan 9 '13 at 16:06
