Has anyone used Blackberry Pearl to connect to a non-3G tablet device (for internet access)? Specifically something like the Archos 70 IT or Samsung Galaxy Tab?

The only tethering methods currently supported on Blackberry services are via USB and bluetooth, and even then the only supported method relies on the Blackberry Desktop software. They don't currently support any wifi tethering or wifi hotspot functionality.

I'm not aware of any third party software for wifi tethering either, unfortunately.

Now if you had a Froyo Android phone you'd have no problem :-)

I'm trying to figure out how to avoid an additional data plan (two are enough). So if I switched from Blackberry phone to Froyo Android phone, then it would act as HotSpot? I'm using Sprint, and even with the Samsung Galaxy Tab, they want an extra $29.99/month for the "Hotspot Add On" (for example, I might want to use it with my PC). I already have the 3G $50/month USB device for laptop use (could use Blackberry with laptop, but then couldn't talk on phone at same time). – NealWalters Dec 16 '10 at 19:32

You could replace your USB 3G adapter with a wireless hotspot: shop.sprint.com/NASApp/onlinestore/en/Action/… Then you could connect your laptop and whatever wifi-enabled tablet you end up with. – Matt Dec 16 '10 at 19:43
@Neal The ability to act as a Wifi hotspot is a feature built into the 2.2 Froyo version of Android (and above) this lets you share your phone's 3G connection to other devices over Wifi developer.android.com/sdk/android-2.2-highlights.html Check before you buy though, I believe some phone companies (Verizon specifically) deliberately disable this feature on their phones. – GAThrawn Dec 16 '10 at 20:47
I ended up getting an Android phone which also acts as WiFi (for extra fee). Didn't know that 4G was finally coming to my area, and that it was unlimited use (so I dropped my USB plan and just pay more for the new plan). Sometimes the guys in the store don't tell you what you really want to know. – NealWalters Dec 21 '10 at 1:57

If your Froyo is rooted, the hotspot works great-my wife uses her Macbook with no problem.
