I'm concerned about an app on my child's phone. I saw an app icon in the notification area that looked strange (Andy Android head, slightly tilted as its icon).

How can I find out what app it is from just having seen that icon in the notification bar?

In the apps list? On your status bar? A screenshot would be ideal, but if it's an app in your installed apps list then it would tell you its name. –  eldarerathis Jan 12 '13 at 2:45

It is in the status bar on my child's phone. I am trying to find out if it is an app he should have or not. I would rather not ask him if it is something that is ok. –  user26602 Jan 12 '13 at 4:32

What version of Android is your child's phone running? If it's Jelly Bean (or, I think, ICS) you can long press a notification and a pop up will say 'App Info', this will tell you the name of the app. –  Peanut Jan 12 '13 at 10:13

I rephrased the Q to be more generic and be helpful for others too. –  ce4 Jan 12 '13 at 11:14

There should be some sort of parental control over that smartphone in your child's hands, but having said that, using it would stop the nonsense coming in, put a firewall on it, run a malware detector on it to see where it's coming from, I did initially think it was some ad-push notification of some sort.. –  t0mm13b Jan 12 '13 at 20:21

There's an app called Package Manager App. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=RabiSoft.PackageManagerAd

It's free. It will tell you back great deal of info without executing the suspicious application.

You need to investigate this on your own. There's a generic way to do this:

There are at least 4 possibilities:

  1. If the phone has Android 4.1 or later you can long press the notification and see the App info:

    enter image description here

  2. Look that App icon up in the list of installed apps on the phone
    Settings->Apps->installed apps

  3. Just click it and see what app starts

  4. Go to the Play store and look through the installed apps on [phone] list
    To access this you need to be logged in with your kid's Google account. On the phone itself this is automatically the case, on the PC you need to enter username/password.
