I've been considering purchasing a Nexus 7 tablet for note-taking at University. Studying maths/engineering, my ideal app would need a number of features, including:

  • The ability to take handwritten notes, and to convert these to printed text either immediately or at a later date (I might want to keep some sections hand-written).

  • The ability to enter equations (ideally these could be converted to a math font (as done here) but this is not essential).

  • The ability to draw diagrams directly onto the notes (i.e. to by-pass the large input box at the bottom of most note-taking apps).

  • My ideal app would have an optional Swype-style keyboard (I think this is built into Android these days???)

  • The ability to organise notes into different folders, and to search through the content of notes.

Does such an ideal app exist? Or am I just dreaming?

Oh, and I'd also like to save the notes in common file formats, e.g. PDF, and be able to touch them up either in the app or in another program so they look good enough to print out. :D – tom Jan 18 at 23:32

Evernote's Skitch (free) and Autodesk's Sketchbook (Express and Mobile Express - Free, Mobile - €1.50, Pro - € 3.76) may do it. Perhaps other Evernote apps may help you. Evernote's apps are note taking apps and Sketchbook is more a Paint-like app.

You should try Scribb.it which offers a few of what you asked for, and offers alternative features. Its free and you can do stuff like make a todo list or make a note with the news headlines or word of the day. Its a very new app to the Play Store but very promising. I use it for work and its increased my productivity by quite a bit, I highly recommend you check it out. Its also optimised for tablet usage.

You should also try Evernote sketch. It has loads of features but doesn't support tablet very well which is what you said you have.
