Since GB 2.3.6 I have had the same problem and none of Samsung firmware updates could fix the matter!
At the moment I use ICS status bar app that is nicely updating the clock and battery level but of course uses battery!
Many of Android application updates are actually problematic! Google Maps new updates as well as Youtube are hanging in memory!
BTW I have not yet root and am afraid I won't dare to attempt rooting either!
