I have a week-old Nexus 4, unrooted with only play-store apps.

Since I've had it, I've found a few times it in the morning stuck with the startup animation (the colorful Nexus X). I was able to boot it after a simple power down and power up.

How can I see why it tried to reboot? How can I see why it failed to?

We just had something similar on Chat, you might want to take a look at the chat protocol. Doesn't provide a solution, but gives you an idea what to try and what it looks like (dmesg via adb). – Izzy Feb 23 at 11:44
