I'm using a Panasonic HDC-TM 700 and a Sony Cyber Shot DSC-HX9V, and unfortunately my Android tablet does not give native support for the .MTS shots captured by my cameras, thus they can not be imported directly into Nexus 7. Is there any way I can convert my MTS footage?

The VideoCamSuite software that came with your camera can export the videos to mpeg2 format. –  Paul Mar 18 '13 at 8:35

you could find many converters can do this when searching in google, but you post here, so I think you need to hear some real experience, ok, I am using a HD video converter from Pavtube, it can help me convert mts files to mp4 files, you can even choose the profile of your tablet model, the important thing which makes me to try it than other free programs, is the great output quality and reasonable price. Well worth a try.
