I'm looking to increase my coding/development ability. Due to a rubbish commute I have lots of minutes here and there - sometimes without signal - currently wasted rather than spent.

Is there a training game that will teach me a language (any will do - or even just basic concepts) through little exercises? I'm happy to pay, I just can't figure out what to pay for.

You could try using Anki

It's a free spaced repetition app, so it's not exactly a game, but it's a way of learning that's more interactive than just reading. What it does is act like flash cards for your phone, although you can download the flash cards other people have created. There are quite a few programming related "shared decks" that you can download (with decks being collections of the Anki flashcards) such as Python, C, Java, C#.

Best thing to do would be to read a book on development; offline reading of pdf files or saved web pages or RSS feeds. Perhaps, if you feel there's a gap in the market here you could write this game yourself! I can't help feeling that perhaps buying a book is the best option, however.

In the past I've spent some time working through these little puzzles:

Which one did I miss? If someone's written one but chosen a name/description which doesn't show up using the obvious search terms then it amounts to the same answer. I'll admit to not searching using languages other than English - perhaps there's a really sweet one for learning Haskell in Mandarin... – Poldie Feb 7 '11 at 19:19
Definite niche: Something lightweight that you can edit and run small bits of procedural code in. (Bonus marks for linking it to something like Project Euler). As I thought I made fairly clear, not "not existing on the internet" but definitely not existing in the marketplace using sensibly chosen name/description. Best way of disproving me is finding a suitable app - feel free to get back to me on that one. Besides, the "no" part of my answer was only about one percent of my total answer, which gave a positive alternative. – Poldie Feb 27 '11 at 16:15

Possibly a little low-brow for your needs, but there are a couple of Logo implementations on the Market, such as Turtle Graphics. As I say, a bit simplistic, but you can at least mess about with loops and so on, and get some pretty pictures as a bonus...
