I use Google Navigator here in the UK (unlimited data plan), but when overseas in France I tried out Navigon on my HTC Desire. They have a great 30 day trial which worked out really well for my seven day driving trip.

I also tried out Google Navigator whilst in France, but it has a fundamental difference in the way it works. I think it is a flaw. The voice over tells you to turn right into xxx street. The problem is that it assumes that you can see your Android screen and that you know the street names, or are able to see them.

By contrast, Navigon will say that you need to turn right in xxx metres into xxx street. This is very helpful when you are just listening to the directions as opposed to watching them. Navigon also stores all of the maps on your SD card so it doesn't require a data plan to use, although the trial requires data access when you start the application. It can then be turned off.

I find that when driving in sunlight you cannot actually see what is on the screen due to glare (at least with the HTC phones). So having good audible instructions are key to a relatively stress free driving experience.

Does anyone else have any feedback on alternative SatNav apps for Android? In particular the features that made the app stand out for you above the others.

I love Google Navigator here in the UK, but this is mainly because I know the roads better and can understand the names of the road easier also. Foreign languages make identifying road names a lot trickier.

Having only used Google Navigator in the UK I hadn't considered the problem with foreign road names, as you say it would be good to have an option to just have "turn xxx in xxx metres" option. – Alastair Aug 4 '10 at 7:28
