Why would /mnt/sdcard/ not appear?

Using ADB shell to view my Samsung Galaxy Tab 7+, I see a /mnt but no /mnt/sdcard/ where according to fable the photos taken by the camera should reside. Why would the sdcard directory not be there? ...
