Swiping apps out of the recent apps list is vanilla, and yes, not well documented. This has been the topic of a decent amount of discussion on various Android forums... the consensus seems to be best described here in some comments: that the behavior is similar to but not exactly the same as closing an app -- in general (for apps that don't define explicit ...

It's not a limitation of Android, but a "feature" of the Youtube app to conserver resources. If you want to use Youtube as a music player, I think you should be able to find an application that allows you to do exactly that in the market. TubeMate lets you listen to only the audio of a Youtube file (you have to download it in advance, though), and that ...

Digging into the PackageManagerService class on grepCode (warning: this class file is huge, your browser may chug a fair bit when rendering it), the optimizing message is displayed in the following context: public void performBootDexOpt() { ArrayList<PackageParser.Package> pkgs = null; synchronized (mPackages) { if ...

Android 4.0 introduces WiFi Direct in to the core of android. it basically creates an adhoc connection between one device and another using WiFi by creating what I guess could be considered an Access Point. You do not need a wifi access point to use WiFi Direct, and actually, if you are connected to wifi when turning on WiFi direct, it will disconnect you. ...

I appear to have found the magical search terms that led to some explanations from Google employees. Specifically, I found a couple of different places where Dianne Hackborn explains what happens when you swipe something out of the recent list. The first is a comment on one of her Google+ posts: [W]hat specifically happens when you swipe away a recent ...

This is a standard 'feature' of ICS. Aside from the notification, changing input methods can be accomplished through the "language and input" section of the phone menu. If you disable and uninstall all keyboards except for one, so there is nothing else to switch to, the notification may disappear.

The su binary needs both the execution and the setuid permission bit set. The first is needed that the file can be executed and the second is that it automatically runs with the file owner's rights (set user id, or setuid. In this case the owner is root. Read more here). Files on the external storage don't have the executable and setuid permission bits set ...

Yes, its possible, from your desktop PC, go to Play Store, and install AndroidLost remotely to your handset. At this point, a caveat emptor is needed: Provided you have 3G Data switched on, it will remotely install on to the handset and also There is sufficient battery power Read the starting page by visiting the main AndroidLost. Send the text ...

Samsung removed "Stay Awake" from TouchWiz back in the first OTA for the Galaxy S1. Other ROMs like CyanogenMod still have it, and other AOSP based ROMs as well. Be very careful using any kind of "Stay Awake" options with these devices that have the Super AMOLED screens. I used to use it when developing and testing the apps. I now have a "burn" in the ...

I use a program called Volume+ Free. Works pretty well. The free one is capped though at +4 db. If you want to go higher you have to get the paid version. The full version can be found for free on the developer's website.

This is a known problem with ICS (up to 4.0.3, I think) : http://groups.google.com/a/googleproductforums.com/forum/#!topic/mobile/ZVK3xcu2NrA If you follow this link you'll also see a solution to the problem (I'd recommend backing up your contacts first, just in case): Assuming your phone is synced with Google Contacts Disable contacts syncing. From ...

Are the Y and Z keys switched? It sounds as if you have the wrong language set for your keyboard (or your system, as it defaults to the systems language). Some European keyboard layouts, possibly German, have a QWERTZ layout instead. Settings > Language & input > Android keyboard (Settings icon) > Input languages

Rest assured, that is not a virus, its a warning dialog to make you aware that you may have the app install from outside of Google Play blocked. It is normal! :) To proceed to check and confirm it is indeed unblocked... Go into Settings > Security > Device Administration, tap on "Unknown sources", a dialog box appears, tap ok as that's a standard ...

It does not, and Flash is also not supported as of now. Information Week reports (and I can personally corroborate): Web apps and extensions, including Adobe Flash Player, are not supported in the initial release of Chrome for Android Beta. Trying to visit the extensions Web Store page on my Xoom results in a page which simply says the following: ...

The problem was bad (or improperly upgraded?) saved data in the launcher app. Here's how I fixed it. At the dialog above, press "Report" When in the report screen, drag down the notification bar at the top of the screen. Press the settings button in the upper left of the notifications area. Tap "Apps", then "All", then find Launcher in the list. Tap ...

You can disable only System apps from Android 4.0 onwards. Check the guide here with video. Basically you have to: Go to your phone’s main settings menu. Go to the “Apps” or “Applications” option. Go to the “All” tab in your list of apps. Find the app you wish to disable and tap on it. Press the disable button next to the force stop button. ...

Technically, yes, you can build the "plain version" of Android: http://source.android.com/source/initializing.html However, it is difficult to do this for all but a handful of devices (official "Google" developer devices, such as the Nexus line of phones) because every Android phone requires its own drivers and these are not freely available. This is where ...

I had the same problem, but I found a solution. I just chose Pattern, turned off the screen, turned it back on and clicked on Forgot in the lower-right corner. After I gave in my Google password it changed automatically back to slide. In the settings the option "none" is still grayed-out but it's selected anywhere and it works.

What's going on is that your phone is not using your password. When you log in an Oath token is issued. This is more secure, because your password is not stored on the device. It also has the additional benefit that it can automatically log you in in your browser. To deny access to your phone, remove the authentication token here. Moreover starting with ...

This is due to a limitation of GMail more than anything. GMail only supports contact icons with a resolution of 64×64, while ICS supports up to 256×256. When you give a contact an icon, Android uploads that new contact icon to GMail... which then promptly downscales it. ...And then Android thinks you changed it to the low-res icon and uses that instead of ...

In Settings -> Wireless & Networks -> Data Usage you should be able to uncheck the "set mobile data limit". The limit will stop data usage when you reach the limit. (You probably have this unchecked already). On this screen is where you can move the "warning" levels up so you will not reach them and you will not receive the notification. One thing to ...

In Ice Cream Sandwich, the old Contacts app was now replaced with the People app. This new app is meant to keep you connected with all of your contacts, not just people you call, and it does so in different ways then the old contacts app, by hooking in to social networks and things like that. The option to only show contacts with a phone number is not an ...

Even if the pure Blackmart App is free of any malicious parts, there is still the danger that you will download an infected version. Blackmart has no official page or download site, that's why you can't be sure about that. It's even worse because it needs root. Those types of programs are usually not open-source, and therefore no one can review the code or ...

Short answer: That's no doubt a software issue, reported across forums after an upgrade to ICS 4.0.x. OK, I think the answer to your question is that Pandora's stream is never more than 64 kbps for mobile devices, whereas Google Music uses 320 kbps MP3s and there's no downsampling. That's 5 times the amount of data, assuming Pandora doesn't use a better format than MP3. Since Google Music transcodes your files, I don't think you have much of an option ...

After some investigation and asking around, I have been told that these settings might be under Settings -> Call -> Other Call Settings, and indeed they were. However, the owner of both a stock Samsung Galaxy S3 and an ICS updated Galaxy S2 told me that those two had the CB settings under Messages -> Settings. I have not been able to find out ...

The little arrow with the - means that you have status bar notifications disabled, which is why you're no longer seeing them. If you pull down the notification shade and then swipe the buttons to the right (I believe it's to the right anyway, check both directions) there should be a toggle to re-enable them:

Answer With Android 4.0 ICS, charge only mode is no longer available. Unfortunately there's no app to deal with this issue AFAIK. You can try, but I believe that this isn't possible with your phone, but for future readers, placing the phone in "media transfer mode", allows access to SD cards on both phone and computer. Further into this matter One can ...
