I believe if you hold the microphone icon it brings up a menu that allows you to change those settings. It may be the comma icon on your phone however. Previous versions allowed you to swipe the keyboard. Otherwise there are many alternative keyboards you can download from the Android Play Store.

I solve this on the Nexus 5 using Tasker with AutoVoice plugin. Once you get both installed, add a profile that reacts to the "AutoVoice BT Pressed" event with the action for running the activity for Google:Voice Search (long clicking on the Google Search app and selecting VoiceSearchActivity from the activities presented.

Setting the system-wide language to English (US) (in addition to having the voice search language set to English (US)) made Voice Commands work. I tried this because of a comment by Chahk. However, I'd rather see a solution where I can have my system-wide language set to something other than English.
