At the moment the highest archived version for Android 2.x & 3.x is 11.1.111.32, not 24.

@TimScarborough - he hasn't got ADB active, and can't open the settings to activate it, so in this case, no.

comment How can I change the behavior of the volume buttons vs. the orientation of the screen
I think you've missed the question a bit. You see, on this device they ARE orientation sensitive. I have two buttons - '1' and '2'. When the tablet is in landscape mode with the buttons on top, '2' lowers the volume, and '1' raises it. When the tablet is in portrait mode, with the buttons on the right, '1' lowers the volume and '2' raises it. This orientation sensitivity is a SERIOUS pain in the neck because I have other devices that DON'T posses this feature, making it devilishly hard to change the volume when I switch devices. Also, see my edits about bluetooth keyboards.

comment How can I read my epub books in Google Books for Android?
Another decent epub reader is Overdrive Media Console. I haven't compared it to others, but it works for me, and it's what my public library uses for some of it's e-book lending.

comment Is there any way to install apps incompatible with Android 4.1.2 (Jelly Bean)
Just to be clear here - doing these things will make the app LOAD, but won't necessarily make it WORK. Don't be shocked if it turns out the app doesn't actually work once you do get it on there. It may be that the developer was just not thinking in how they setup the manifest, but it's possible that they've done something that means the app really won't run, or perhaps the app has serious bugs under your version, so they've locked it out. Either way, just don't be surprised if the app doesn't do so well once you've force it to run on your system.

comment pdf reader which has zoom and width locking?
Release version (October 14, 2012) in play store works great, but make sure to go into the settings to choose what various taps and presses do. To get it work to my liking, I disabled the zoom buttons, and make the top/bottom taps go page up/down.

comment Can I “clone” my credit card using the Nexus S and Galaxy Nexus's NFC chip? If not, why not?
@Midhat - if it's intended for security, then you aren't going to be able to easily clone it (unless the vendor was a complete bunch of morons). Normally devices that are used for security are NOT just 'here's my number' kinds of things - they have some info internally, and when the reader asks, they do something and return an answer, so as to avoid just this problem. That's not to say that it's 100% foolproof, but you're not going to just sit it near your phone and clone it.

comment Dropbox export folder to SD card?
I use DropSync to keep a folder on my SD card synced with my Dropbox (it works more or less like the desktop app). The DropBox mobile app is more of a mobile app version of the web site, rather than a real sync tool.

Also, I Googled around a bit and noted that some folks have even been able to use standard serial adapters with a serial terminal program - no rooting required! That could be very useful, because I'd bet that not a few USB receipt printers actually have something like the FTDI serial USB chips embedded in them, rather than anything custom.

@AlEverett - according to the docs at USB Host, it's supported in Android 3.1 and up (so, from a software perspective, almost every tablet). Now that doesn't mean all hardware supports it, but since the OP seems to be in the early stages of the project, it would be simple to choose tablets that do have USB support, either with full sized USB connectors, or USB-on-the-go adapters.
