For what it's worth, I have seen the same problem in my Galaxy Ace. I can be standing under certain routers, yet the connection will fail.

My Galaxy Ace is not old, either (I have had it for about 45 days), so I don't think the battery is problem.

Try to disable the proximity sensor, I had similar problem with my Galaxy Ace and it helped.

The same principles can be applied for any device that connects over wireless: use only HTTPS web pages, don't use untrusted wireless networks etc...
