How is WhatsApp able to receive messages when not in use? When you say "waiting for an incoming network connection", do you mean waiting for a TCP connection to be established? How can it wait for a such a thing when the phone is not connected to the Internet? Or is there some kind of mechanism that connects the phone to the Internet when there's a Whatsapp message to receive? |

How is WhatsApp able to receive messages when not in use? Thanks for being more specific, but I still think that the crux of the issue wasn't looked at by your analysis. Step 8 is the troublesome one for me: How does it "push the message to your phone"? Send a network packet? But how can your device receive a network packet without being continuously online? Or perhaps there's some kind of mechanism that I'm not familiar with that makes the connection reestablish when a network packet is sent to your phone? |

How is WhatsApp able to receive messages when not in use? How could the server do a push? That's the crux of the question. |

Filtering notifications Regarding the Play Store app, I have "Notifications" disabled but I still get notifications. The sad truth is that even the apps that do let you control their notifications, don't have controls that are fine-grained enough. It's not that I don't want to receive all notifications from the app, it's only some of them. If I cancel all the notifications from a certain app, I might be missing some important notifications. So really I don't see how what you're proposing is helping me. |

Marking notifications as unread Sounds good, I think I'll upgrade :) |

Cancelling notifications for app updates I don't see how this is a solution to my problem. I want to stop notifications about app updates for all apps, and I don't want to stop notifications for the Play store app. |

Marking notifications as unread No, marking text messages as unread does not solve my problem because unread text messages do not get my attention. I never go into the SMS app to check for them. I rely on notifications. |
