comment Installing app (“SMS Backup Restore”) on old Motorola Droid 2 (Android 2.3.3)
AFAIK there is no newer official Android version available for the Droid 2. You could however check with custom ROMs. My Droid 2 runs Kitkat (4.4.4) with the help of CyanogenMod (that's the latest version available for this device altogether). XDA has the details on how to reach this goal. Was quite a while ago for me, so I don't remember them all (something like root › bootstrap › custom recovery › custom ROM, basically). If you then really want the Google stuff, you can flash the matching GApps (I've decided for microG instead).

No guarantees – but yes, that's what's most likely.

Great! Then I'll cleanup comments here now. Consider deleting your previous post if you agree it's obsoleted by this one :)

Well, that really seems to be a brick (see: What does it mean to “brick” your phone?) – and obviously leaves you right at the beginning. As I've said, the possibility exists your data could be read. How likely that is is a different question. If the storage is really dead, unless you're the president of something big, efforts to do so wouldn't seem worth it (if I were the repair man).

comment How to pull mmcblk0 to a windows pc?
@user1133275 you might have a point there – but then dd if=/dev/block/mmcblk0 of=/sdcard/something.bin shouldn't have worked either. If you checked that yourself and it worked for you, guess we've simply got to believe you and add "this might not always work. If it doesn't, use the other approach" :)

Thought so. Still added it for other confused people like us, so they don't think they've gone nuts and are the only ones seeing a discrepancy here :)

Strange. If you check ADB pull error: remote object '/dev/block/mmcblk0p24' not a file or directory, it just gave remote object '/dev/block/mmcblk0' not a file or directory – which is what I had expected here.

Welcome to Android Enthusiasts! Please note that recommendations like Is there an app for X are off-topic here (see What topics can I ask about here? for details). For where your question might fit better, you might want to look into Where can I ask questions that aren't Android Enthusiast questions? and Where to ask for app recommendations?.

Custom ROMs rarely ship with Google Apps already integrated. So I wonder how you were able to a) run the Play Store app and b) clearing cache from Play Store + Google Services (as your question states) if those haven't been installed :)

You cannot adb pull a device, sorry – so that won't work. Not even in recovery.
