comment How can I determine the hostname of another machine on the local network?
No, I don't. The DHCP server is assigning the IP to your PC. If the same server acts as DNS server, it can tell that to your device. For details on this part, Super User is the better part to ask. On the Android part, you just configure what DNS servers to use. I'm not sure it that setting persists when you switch back to DHCP afterwards, so you might be correct that using a fixed IP address for your Android device could be involved as well.

That rather sounds as if your "new contacts" have never been synced (maybe sync was turned off?). If that's the case: No way without physical access to your lost device.

Android doesn't support ad-hoc networks out of the box. And even back in the box, it's not easily achieved. See the question Dan linked.

There is no tool that roots all Android devices. So unless you specify your device (which you forgot), there's no way we can help you but pointing to the question t0mm13b linked.

@StephenSchrauger I guess it's rather using multiple aliases for the same mailbox, which are handled by the server – so e.g. john@example.com and john.doe@example.com end up in the same mailbox automatically (note the free email services offering aliases in the question's title). Boris then most likely wants to answer mails adressed at john@example.com with this address, and john.doe@example.com the same way (respond with the address the mail was sent to).

"It's not working" is not that precise. Maybe you edit your question and include what you've tried and what exactly failed? You might also wish to check other related questions here or here. See the "Related" section on this page as well :)
