comment The device has either stopped responding or has been disconnected
There are multiple ways copying a file via USB. Which one did you use: MTP, ADB push, …?

comment Wifi doesn't reconnect to known network
No idea what's causing that, but as a work-around: Try switching to airplane mode and back might be a little more convenient than restarting the device.

comment Difference in partition size
All file systems need reserved space for management. Sorry I've not checked first the one in use here; but e.g. when bad blocks occure, their data must be saved somehow. And the Metadata must be stored somewhere. Find out about reserved sector areas for FAT at Wikipedia.

comment Difference in partition size
Not clearly an Android question, but rather about storage media: reserved blocks to protect your data in case something "breaks". See e.g. Formatting a new SD card (Ctrl-F and enter "reserved" ;) Affects usually ~5% of disk space.

comment How to display/obtain detailed app data usage of last 24h?
Funny. I cannot test with 5.1.1 (no matching device). Try grapping them at their "lower end" (directly on the X axis) – won't work if grabbed "in the middle". Also, tapping the X axis should reveal their resp. markers to make them easier to handle.

I'm moving them left or right (tap-and-hold, then move), until exactly the wanted period is covered.

You've seen the vertical bars in Settings › Data Usage and that you can use them to restrict stats to e.g. those 24h?

comment I need to access the “system disk” on my Android phone from my laptop
You can't access those data without root. But no, your text messages are not stored on the "system disk" – but below the /data folder and managed by the system. Again, no access there without root.
