comment How can I test the NFC capability of my Android?
Be aware that the Mifare Classic tags are an outdated spec that might not be supported in future devices -- it seems they already won't work with the Nexus 5.

comment Can my phone act as a WiFi access point without mobile data?
I was sure it wouldn't work, but I was able to turn off wi-fi, turn off mobile data, then turn on the hotspot. Thanks, @Rilwan! (Do you maybe want to make a separate answer for that, then I can accept it?)

Also! Would I have to take the SIM out to make sure it doesn't try to charge for data? Right now I just set the "mobile data" switch to OFF.

Is there an equivalent syntax from the Terminal Emulator on the phone itself? (I don't have a computer handy at the moment, but I do have Terminal Emulator)

comment Can I restore my CM10.1 phone to factory ROM without using USB?
Yup, I tried at least 3 different chargers, plus 2 USB cables on different PCs. It's a consistent problem. It's possible that the port is just "dirty" or something -- I might try cleaning it with an old toothbrush before I send it back -- but it seems more likely to me to be an internal problem.

comment Gmail stuck on “Waiting for sync”
I understand that the problem is likely specific to this ROM, but I thought that there might be troubleshooting steps I could take (looking at system logs, etc) that are not. At any rate, I started getting mail randomly on Sunday after uninstalling Firefox, so who knows what actually caused it.

I appreciate the idea, but this is my wife's phone -- she specifically doesn't want to (her words) "fiddle with it" and if that ends up being necessary to get a working device, she's just going to return it and probably buy another operating system :/

Thanks, Matthew. I had a similar issue with the Captivate (the GPS, in that case) where some advised swapping out handsets for a better receiver, but I waited too long and got stuck with a bad one. I want to avoid doing that here.
