comment How do I properly install a system app given its .apk?
Beautiful answer. Thanks. One comment, I was not able to "mv my-app.apk /system/app". I got an error "failed on 'XXX.apk' - Cross-device link". I was able to CP and RM the apk as described in android.stackexchange.com/questions/75920/…

MTP from Windows works, but I see why people in the Reddit thread are complaining. It does not behave like a drive or partition under Windows. I usually use Microsoft RichCopy, but it doesn't look like RichCopy can see the MTP device (it doesn't have a drive letter or UNC path). Windows Explorer can see the file system through MTP and I can get to the DCIM folder, but my file copy hung for no apparent reason and I had to restart it.

Take a look at reddit.com/r/Android/comments/1aqjd0/…. I don't think my phone supports USB Mass Storage as described in this post. They suggest just using MTP which seems fine.

When I go to settings->Storage and then pick the menu and then pick "USB Computer connection" my only choices are MTP or PTP. I don't have a "storage mode" option. I looked at the suggestions in forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2350542 but none seem to work for me. How do I put my device in Storage mode?

I never found a solution for my phone (Galaxy Nexus), however I found other phones behaved differently. A Galaxy S3 worked fine in portrait mode on HDMI output. I ended up primarily demoing using droid@screen - droid-at-screen.ribomation.com - and if I have access to a Galaxy S3 or S4 I use the Samsung specific version of Teamviewer - QuickSupport - play.google.com/store/apps/…

Thanks. I grumbled at first, but this is probably a better question in its current form. I would love a software/configuration fix rather than to purchase a new phone fix. I'm just skeptical about a soft solution so I crafted the first post more about recommendations rather than solutions. But your guidelines are correct. I need a solution, not necessarily a new phone.
