@CaseyB That is curious. I expected it to also always work at least on the same device. But mine has never worked. On the online market place, I can see a list of my apps. But they do not download automatically.

Bingo! I've googled the whole day and couldn't find this. Thanks mate. Also Google just released hardware drivers for those using AOSP, I'm including them here for reference.

I guess that works for the Nexus One. Didn't work for the Nexus S though.

I do not need root. There don't seem to be any stock images provided by Google, and fastboot does not seem to work with image dumps which have been made using other custom backup tools like nandroid. Rebooting into recovery and using (update.zip) also always fails with signature verification. I guess I'll have to use one of the custom tools for recovery.

@Stefano I built it myself. When Android is built from source, no Google applications or services are present.

@Matthew-Read I built the android source and flashed to the phone. So self-made custom.
