Thank you for responding. Running lsusb gets me this response: Bus 002 Device 011: ID 04e8:685b Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd GT-I9100 Phone [Galaxy S II] (mass storage mode). However, after following your instructions to the letter, I still only see the 12GB internal storage.

@UriHerrera: Thanks for responding. It doesn't seem to be the case with my phone in its current state. There is an /sdcard directory, but when mounted by USB, if I transfer files there, they are then on the internal storage, not the external SD card. Also, the drive only shows 12GB available, whereas I should have 12GB + an additional 16GB for the SD card. Lastly, Banshee does not automatically recognize the 16GB space where my music files like it did before, which is problematic. The last thing I want to do is start fighting with Banshee settings to get it to see a subdirectory.

comment Why do all the directories on my tablet have all these weird numbers?
@hheimbuerger: I'm not running 4.0.3. I'm running 3.2. I wanted to run ICS on my Galaxy Tab, but apparently there isn't support for the camera yet.

comment Can I disable MTP mode and just have a regular USB connection?
Okay, so I need to forget about trying to not have MTP and instead focus on how to make it work on Ubuntu. Thanks for clarifying.

Also, I tried to install gmtp as you recommended in a comment above, and I got through the whole process, but when I actually attempt to connect to my device through the gmtp interface, it hangs.

There's no Settings -> Wireless and networks -> USB Settings either, I'm afraid. The only USB setting that I have found anywhere in the settings is Applications->Development->USB debugging. As mentioned in the question, it has no impact on this issue.

Thank you for responding. However, there is no menu button at all under storage. There's just a bar graph showing me the device's storage memory usage. And I might be blind to the obvious, but I can't find any "USB Connection mode" option anywhere in the settings interface.
