I am an algorithm developer using MATLAB in my day job.

After a long day of writing code, I like to come home and relax by...writing more code -- I've recently picked up writing Android apps as a hobby. After 30 years of constantly expanding computing power, it's fascinating to return to a restrictive environment where you not only need to be concerned about limited memory and processing power, but conserving battery charge as well.

My rusty Java skills make this hobby even more interesting, as does the switch back and forth between high-level MATLAB and lower-level Java.

comment How do I keep my headphone jack from disabling my bluetooth speakerphone in my car?
My headphone jack on my S3 died and which I was configuring the warranty replacement, I tried SoundAbout again. I find that I needed to get the paid version for all of the features that I needed, but this is working nicely for me now.

I've heard that about Lithium batteries, and I've also heard that it's an "old wives tale". See android.stackexchange.com/questions/29073/….

comment Default contact for a number
Is there a similar way to do this for an email address? My son starting using email before he was old enough for a gmail account. So my wife gave him wife-son@gmail.com. Now gmail from my wife (wife@gmail.com) comes up as "Son's name" not "Wife's name", which is annoying.

comment Android keyboard resizes when changing letter casing
I agree with @Tareq in the use of an alternate keyboard, although I prefer Swiftkey. My children have the default keyboard on the Nexus 7 tablets, and it drives me nuts when I have to fix something. Especially not being able to long press for number but having to switch to a different keyboard entirely. Of course, it's still easier than inputting a 64-bit WPA2 passcode into a Nest thermostat. :-)

I'm back home now. I never was able to solve this problem. I actually went out a purchased a new SIM card + 1 month of service ($21 total) from a different local provider, but this didn't help either. Cell phone service did improve, so I kept it. It also was about 90% cheaper than the original service that I arranged.
