comment How to prevent sleep while installing lots of updates?
The fix that I found satisfactory in the end was to set the sleep timer to 10 minutes, as suggested by @Sid. I'm the type of person who likes to manually turn off my phone anyways, since otherwise random things get activated in the pocket.

For the record, this didn't work for me either, not really sure why.

And so you can! Brilliant. Just a note for future visitors: this is not available from the permissions prompt; you have to go and open the app's details page.

@RossC no that's correct, I see the same. It asks me to confirm again, but it shows the full list of permissions, without showing which ones I confirmed the last time, requiring me to check them all again.

@aureljared 3G and Wi-Fi were permanently enabled in both cases. The phone was in exactly the same location: my house.

comment How to make use of the entire screen area on Android 4.1 in full-screen mode?
I guess most people prefer an always-on-screen button to a hardware return button, though I will probably never understand why...

comment How does rooting work?
I think this misses one important thing: the su is itself not magic at all, the only magic about it is that the OS treats it specially. All it has to do is return "OK" or "Not OK" when asked by the OS whether to allow a particular application to elevate permissions. If it's missing, or always returns "Not OK" then normal apps can never get root. So rooting is basically the process of placing an su binary that can sometimes return "OK", into the protected location on a system which isn't supposed to allow this to be done.
