I am a android.stackexchange.com member for about a year, CS student and supporter of the open source idea. I also write Android Apps. One of them is GTalkSMS, which I co-author. It’s an LGPL licensed Android App that makes heavy use of the Android API and uses the open-standard XMPP (Jabber) to make some real interesting and funny things with your phone via Instant Messaging. When I am doing some work for the site, I am rewarded here and there with reputation.

I’d like to see more focus on the wiki aspect. Every user is encouraged to make edits to every post if he sees an error or has something to improve. Having more than 8.000 registered users, there are currently only 5 (!) people with more than 80 edits. That needs to change!

I am involved in the Tag organisation and clean-up. Having a flat, vertical organization (e.g. no sub forums), tags are the only thing that prevents chaos and keeps the site sane.

Moderation

Shouldn’t be done by me. Participation is the keyword. Everyone is invited and warmly welcomed to vote, edit and flag. Moderators are there to have a second look. I did some wrong flagging by myself and was happy that there was someone to to correct that. Humans make mistakes, I am sure you know. ;-)

Of course I promise to follow the decisions that are made by meta. But again, you establish (and change) the rules, not the moderators. Just state your opinion and vote on meta!

Hello! My name is Bryan Denny and I am currently one of the Moderator Pro Tempores of Android Enthusiasts. I would like to be considered for nomination in the moderator election.

I was originally an active member on the first Android StackExchange 1.0 site, forceclose.com. When Android.SE opened up, I quickly created an account here (one of the first, if not the first) and participated on both sites until the StackExchange 1.0 sites were phased out. Needless to say, Android is a big passion of mine and I absolutely love helping others fix their problems.

And I have to admit, trying to read through some forums such as XDA can be a pain when the answer you need is on page 23 of a 80 page thread. So that's why I created some questions here (community wikis now) to hopefully help point some users in the right direction with some of the more "technical" details of Android (rooting/roms):

I'm also an Android developer so I get to see both perspectives as both a user and a developer. I've invested some time in answering Android specific questions over on StackOverflow (I even did this such that I could add a link to Android.SE in the Android tag wiki as I felt that was a relevant cause). I've also had some participation over at GameDev (mostly for Android too). You can also ocassionally see me on http://reddit.com/r/android, a site I check daily to stay on top of Android news. I also own a small plethora of Android devices that I'm pretty comfortable with (Droid1, NookColor, Xoom, G1).

I firmly believe that a community should be able to democratically moderate itself, which the StackExchange platform was perfectly designed for (question/answer scores, voting to close, flagging, etc.). It is those few and rare times that one such as myself need to step in and intervene with the odd exception (and it really has been a rare occasion in this fantastic community). It has been my job to take care of the issues you bring up on meta.Android.SE and through flags and I hope to continue to do so.

In the past year, we, together, have been able to successfully control our "question smells" (what is your favorite X?, is there an app that does Y?, dev questions, speculations, etc.), guide new users to the right place (whether helping them ask questions here or pointing them to the Android tag on StackOverflow), solve "tags" and their naming, synonyms, wikis, etc., and overall improve the quality of our questions and answers while discarding the bad. We still have some improvements to make (especially in growth, both overall and in our higher reputation users) but I feel that everyone working together can get us there.

And no matter what, I will still continue to help those in the Android community with questions that need to be answered!

Hello! My name is Carter, and I'm nominating myself for one of the moderator positions. I didn't find Android Enthusiasts until it was out of beta, but I've been around ever since and I tend to be around on a pretty much daily basis. I think this is a great resource, and I'd like to help keep it running smoothly and improve it however possible.

I think I'd make a good candidate for a handful of reasons, but mainly because I'm well-spoken, a generally good judge of what belongs (or doesn't) on the site, and I'm willing to participate in reasoned discussion about grey areas. I also spend a lot of time using the semi-moderation tools available to me here and over on Stack Overflow. I use my close votes when I need to, and I try to edit anything that I think can be improved.

Some relevant "qualifications":

• Active member for over a year
• Regularly check and participate on our meta site
• Earned the Deputy, Strunk & White, and Civic Duty badges
• Active on a pretty much daily basis

My personal moderation philosophy is something of two minds. I think that moderators first and foremost should deal with that which cannot be dealt with by other users (the "human exception handler"), but I also think that egregiously off-topic or inappropriate questions and answers should be dealt with immediately. Leaving extremely low-quality content to fester is not good for anyone. Whenever possible, I think that salvagable content should be edited. I also believe that transparency is an important part of any decision making process, and I have in the past tried to always provide users with very clear reasons why I was, for example, voting to close questions.

I'm very much invested in trying to help out already, and I'd be thrilled to help out even more. So if you want someone who's pretty much guaranteed to spend a lot of time in the mod tools, review page, and so forth, consider voting for me!

My name is Al Everett and I humbly put forward my name for consideration as a Moderator.

I am a Moderator Pro Tem and have been since October, 2010. I joined this site as soon as it came out of private beta.

I am an avid Android user and find this site to be invaluable. As such, I am an active user of the site and expect to be for the foreseeable future, regardless of the outcome of this election. I am also one of the top users at Web Applications and participate actively at Stack Overflow (primarily in the ColdFusion tag) and Meta Stack Overflow.

I have been active in online communities for years. I ran a BBS before the World Wide Web ever existed. I have, at various times, run a Guild in an MMO, maintained the Usenet FAQ for Magic: The Gathering, helped manage and maintain discussion forums for a number of different passions, and currently have a long-standing blog on another topic entirely. In other words, I have long experience managing and maintaining online communities.

As far as Moderating, I am strong proponent of the "Broken Windows" theory. That is, issues, even small ones, that are ignored will tend to breed other problems. If something is "wrong" it needs to be dealt with quickly and decisively. But also even-handedly; no one should ever feel persecuted.

By the same token, I also believe in "don’t bite the newbies". The Stack Exchange sites are different than most other sites out there. People who are new to Android Enthusiasts (or any Stack Exchange site) might need a little gentle prodding in order to "grok" how to get the most out of, and contribute the most to, the site and the collection of knowledge we’re creating.

I love this site and I spend a lot of time here. In two weeks I'll have been here for a year, with over 800 answers, and a mod for 4 months. I want to continue contributing to this site as much as I can.

I think I have a good grasp of how this site works and how to moderate fairly. The community is king, and a good mod should follow and implement the consensus built on Meta. I believe in A Theory of Moderation and this site is excellent in that regard: serious events are rare, allowing moderators to be exception handlers and not constantly putting out fires. That said, I'm a very active mod and I don't hesitate to keep a watchful eye on the metaphorical matches.

Like Al, I also believe in fixing broken windows, and it's wonderful to moderate in a community that believes this as well. Our transition from allowing to disallowing what's-your-favorite-app questions and their ilk has been remarkably smooth, and is a testament to the willingness of the community to work together to build a great site.

There is work to do here, such as building up a core group of high-rep users with access to the review tools to help out the moderators. As a "real mod" I would continue working towards our goals through brainstorming on Meta, helping with promotions, tag cleanups, and acting on your flags.

I think my track record is pretty good, and I intend to better it. I'd appreciate your help with that goal!
