Feb 13, 2017 at 1:13 | comment | added | iBug | @Stilez Windows has the best compatibility with other things so it's best to fit others' requirements first. If OP's sharing between Win & Linux, then ext4. If Win & Mac (despite being off-topic), then HFS+. If Linux & Mac, I'll give up and recommend exFAT.
Feb 12, 2017 at 23:17 | comment | added | Stilez | To clarify (as OP), I asked what I needed to know. I dont need to ask about other device compatibility, the question is purely about filing systems able to be used, and permissions implications/other pros and cons... given that I can narrow down other device compatibility separately if relevant.
Feb 12, 2017 at 9:20 | comment | added | iBug | @DeathMaskSalesman I have no idea of adding an answer. The OP didn't tell us what devices he'd like to share data among. There's so much to discuss that I think it's unnecessary.
Feb 12, 2017 at 4:03 | comment | added | Grimoire | @iBug Well, if exFAT is supported by many devices, then why not? Do you plan to add it as an answer?
Feb 12, 2017 at 2:47 | comment | added | iBug | @DeathMaskSalesman Are you sure to recommend FAT32 for so large a storage? FAT32 is a quite bad idea for volumes of 32GB or up in size. Instead I recommend exFAT because any system that supports volumes larger than 32GB must also support exFAT as well.
Feb 11, 2017 at 14:41 | comment | added | Stilez | No easy option to get a journalling FS without permissions chaos or a lot of work, then?
Feb 11, 2017 at 11:37 | comment | added | Grimoire | If the other devices support it, EXT4 would be your best choice. Keep in mind that, as you thought, permissions will be messy at best, so you would have to edit them to be world readable-writeable-executable quite often (bad practice and security flaw). If you want to play it safe, go for FAT32, but mind that the maximum file size would be 4GB-1. Lastly, if you are brave and believe that all your devices might support it, you could give NTFS a try.
