Jul 17, 2019 at 19:17 comment added Doktor J I agree with IMSoP. While useful as a "quick check" this is far from foolproof (my old stock LG phone running 6.0 looks closer to the "9.0" screenshot than the "6.0" screenshot!). The process in Nzall's answer, while a bit more involved, provides much more concrete confirmation.
Jul 17, 2019 at 16:36 comment added IMSoP While this is a useful quick check, it's worth noting that many builds of Android are heavily customised by OEMs (e.g. Samsung's "Touchwiz"). It would be perfectly possible to build a ROM based on Android 6 that looked very like your second screenshot, if someone was trying to pass off the phone as something that it wasn't. The system information in Nzall's answer seems a much better clue.

Jul 17, 2019 at 11:34 comment added emmalyx Android 6 Marshmallow is not, in fact, still supported. Its last security update was released in August 2018.
Jul 17, 2019 at 10:52 comment added alecxs It's a normal android you can use normal. android 6 is still supported official
Jul 17, 2019 at 9:11 comment added Steven Haggerty Thanks all. Assuming I treat this phone as a BIO HAZARD and want to nuke it from orbit, is there a generic android 9.0 I can install? It appears 9.0 is only appearing for certain devices at the moment. I can put an axe through it, but it'd be nice to get some use from it!
Jul 17, 2019 at 9:10 comment added Andrew T. @StevenHaggerty with root and build.prop, it's possible for anyone to fake the Android version (ref: MIUI forum)
Jul 17, 2019 at 8:51 comment added Ferrybig @StevenHaggerty Note that android 9 was released in August 6, 2018, and your screenshots show that your phone has the security patches from May, 2017, another sign that there was some tampering
Jul 17, 2019 at 7:27 comment added Qwertie @StevenHaggerty Certainly possible and likely not very difficult. If you plan to continue to use this phone I would install a clean version of the OS on the device as you can't know what other changes have been made. Or try to get a refund.
Jul 16, 2019 at 20:38 comment added Steven Haggerty Thanks, looks like it's android 6.0 then. I guess the only thing that would give this kind of result is a tampered with version of android, made to show these results in About Phone?
