If that's your case too, its the reason why your SSH client can't see keys by default. But, with -i flag, you can override the default path, so there's no point of looking $HOME. This is the correct solution if your trimmed down SSH client supports it. So, try it after putting keys on sdcard. If it fails, there's no other way unless you change SSH client.
Apr 27, 2012 at 14:20 comment added eldarerathis @Yuttadhammo: The weird thing is that $HOME (for root) is set to /data on my phone, but ssh seems to ignore any directories I try to set up there. I've never really figured out why that is, but I haven't had a need to really dig into it, either.
Apr 27, 2012 at 13:59 comment added yuttadhammo Thanks, I had thought of that, but never got around to trying it. It just seems strange that there is no place that the ssh command will look for the .ssh directory... maybe it's because there is no $HOME set?
