Apr 16, 2016 at 13:40 | comment | added | nsandersen | For any UK readers, Three are offering unlimited mobile data with 30GB of tethering allowance for £20-£25 per month depending on contract length and included call minutes. The data/minutes can apparently also be used in various countries with no extra charge.

I can't really answer the more general questions of whether or not this is technically feasible, but for T-Mobile specifically it's probably worth noting that their ToS states: Unlimited 4G data includes 2.5 GB of tethering . It's not entirely unsurprising, though, since otherwise they'd have basically no market for their mobile broadband plans.

clarify why a phone and not a USB modem

Jan 25, 2014 at 5:12 | comment | added | peteorpeter | Good question - you use a phone because all modem data contracts are capped (as far as I know). TMobile phone 4G contracts gave an unlimited option.
Jan 25, 2014 at 4:38 | comment | added | aleksikallio | Why would you use a phone and not a dedicated USB 4g modem? Some routers allow these to be plugged directly to the router for sharing...
