The problem is happening on a very old HTC Sensation running Android 4.0.3, and all the help found online refers to more modern versions.

In Apps -> Google Play Store, I forced stop, cleared data and cache, rebooted but it didn't cure the problem. I also performed a factory reset without success. Someone in the Google Play Help Forum advised me to call the Play support team which I did. They sent me an email, I followed the procedure but it didn't fix anything. They told me to contact HTC if the bug still persisted, which I did a while ago but no reply, so far.

I have solved this problem and I am posting the solution here in case someone else would have the same problem. I downloaded, installed and ran Lucky Patcher apk file V6.4, for Android 4.0.3, 4.0.4 from here and it did the trick.

This may happen due to accidentally deleting some files. But you can get rid of this problem by downloading latest APK of Google Play Store. Before installing, make sure you are installing the latest version of Google Play Store.

  • As you always seem to link to that website (Megebyte): What is your association with it? Note that you must disclose that if you're affiliated. Also, on SE sites links serve as reference – not as replacement for details. Answers should always include at least their abstract – so those details are not lost if the link dies.

Well, it seems OP is affiliated with the link (based on his profile). However, the OP is long gone since then. (Removed the link until the OP come back)

  • Indeed the problem may be with the outdated GP version. Lucky Patcher is able to help in some cases and can't in other. Eventually I could defeat the problem at my Android 4.0.4 device. I was able to install a custom firmware (after a full wipe) which eventually got a more recent GP version.
