I have a new phone after an old phone stopped working suddenly. I'm having trouble with old messages on Whatsapp (over the last year). Some of those messages are from individuals who sadly passed away. I hope this is not too long and doesn't get deleted as I need help.

1) Where are old Whatsapp messages stored (SD, internal, Whatsapp server, nowhere)?

2) I have an old Whatsapp database file. Can I view that externally on a PC or Mac?

3) Unread messages that I'm seeing in one group are out of order (by sender not time). Why?

Thanks for your help.

  • As for part 2, it depends upon your database's extension, since it, if prior to crypt9, can be manually decrypted and examined from outside WhatsApp. – Death Mask Salesman Jun 3 '16 at 7:09
  • While waiting for answers, also check our most frequented WA questions. You might find some answers there already. – Izzy Jun 3 '16 at 9:16
  • Thank you both very much. Is there a link on how to manually decrypt? Thanks Izzy for the link. From that, it looks like even if I get the option to bring back old messages it would delete new messages I have. Also there are no recent db files on my SD and there is no Whatsapp folder on the new phone so it doesn't seem like it is auto backing up. Manually decrypting on my PC from the old database file I have may be best. – nopogalaxy Jun 8 '16 at 1:56
