I recently bought the Galaxy Tab S2, 9.7" (T813; Android Marshmallow) thinking I could simultaneously charge it and read files from a standard USB drive using a cable such as one found here.

However, once I got my tablet and went to buy the above cable, I saw in the comments that it does not charge the tablet (the female micro USB extension must just read micro USB drives). I've looked at countless cables like the one above, and all of them say the same thing in the comments - they do not charge the tablet (parent device).

For work, I keep my files on a standard USB, as I use multiple devices on a given day and need to be able to access my files on all of them (cloud isn't an option for me for various reasons, so please do not recommend that as a solution). Thus, there will be instances where I'll need to charge my tablet and simultaneously read files from a USB drive.

Basically, I need a cord that looks exactly like the one at the above link, but where the female micro USB port actually charges the tablet (parent device) when the micro USB charging cable is plugged into it (and obviously the female standard USB reads files from my USB drive).

Does anyone know of a cable that achieves these two things?

I've already explored this issue via:

  1. Samsung customer service (multiple times to see if I could get different answers)
  2. Samsung community forum (no responses to-date)
  3. Reading Amazon product descriptions and reviews
  4. Asking other Amazon customers (no knowledge of such a product)
  5. Asking Best Buy employees (didn't know cables wouldn't charge)
  6. Internet searches
  7. Facebook crowdsourcing (no responses)
  8. Asking a family member who works in IT (not aware of any such product)
  9. Hardware Recommendations StackExchange

After all of this, I've come up with nothing and am running out of resources. I need to figure out if this tablet will work for me or if I need to return it.

This problem is relevant to Android users in general, as many Android devices now only have a micro USB port, and a reduced number of ports is becoming more popular on devices in general, which will thus be a problem into the foreseeable future.

If you ultimately deem it off-topic for this community, are you able to suggest a community where it could be asked? – Meg Jan 17 '17 at 21:12

It's indeed a situation hard to deal with at this moment. The only thing I know that's even close is Hardware Recommendations. Maybe you want to shoot your thoughts onto Meta for discussion. – Andy Yan Jan 18 '17 at 0:27

I've reopened this because I don't think it is a recommendation question. See android.stackexchange.com/questions/157856/… for why this is about the tablet, not the particular cable used. – Dan Hulme Jan 18 '17 at 10:24

I too had voted for re-opening for reasons mentioned by OP. I too searched around but couldn't find anything. Suggestion is to post it on XDA and hope for a response. IMO, to my understanding it should be possible but something is breaking it, like Kernel in the answer mine which Dan Hulme linked. Do post your solution eventually as a self answered question for the benefit of community. Thanks – beeshyams Jan 19 '17 at 2:46

See this XDA post for some possible solutions- but Samsung being Samsung, nothing can be said about how successful it would be forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2303902 – beeshyams Jan 19 '17 at 2:52
