My wife has a Samsung Galaxy S8+ with Oreo. Often when I send her a text containing an emoji, or she sends me one, the other person receives it as a box like this: ☒

I have a Nokia 6.1. But my suspicion is that her phone, not mine, is the problem, because I saw the same thing when I had a Windows phone.

What do I need to do to her phone to get it to send emojis properly?

  • You didn't mention which text apps are being used on each device. Side note, Android developers now have a EmojiCompat library but does require integration and a extra data download. – Morrison Chang Jan 15 '19 at 5:35
  • Standard Google messaging app on my side. On her side it happens with either the Samsung messaging app or the Google one. – Kyralessa Jan 15 '19 at 5:37
  • Would be curious if it still happens when both are running updated Google messaging app. I do know that Google is trying to roll out RCS on the Google messaging app. I'm not familiar with the Samsung messaging app. Just to be sure, you may want to list out what carrier(s) each phone is using. – Morrison Chang Jan 15 '19 at 5:52
  • We both use Deutsche Telekom. – Kyralessa Jan 15 '19 at 5:55
