Now being the owner of a tablet with a broken screen (touchscreen & LCD both cracked; LCD incomprehensible) I'm wishing I had thought ahead to prepare the device for the condition its now in.

Specifically I'd like to be able to get certain files off the thing but can't get access. If it were a PC I'd just take out the hard drive, but I don't know of any equivalent here. I gather now after the fact that there are certain developer-oriented things you might do to an Android device to ensure headless access to it.

So, what steps should be taken in advance to give yourself the best shot at recovery from internal storage, should the worst happen?

I have several Android devices and so I'm looking for general advice, but FYI they are Moto G's and Kindle Fires.
