I've got a phone that's having problems updating to Android 9. It constantly fails the update saying "Installation Problem" with no further detail. However, I don't need the phone to update right now, I just need to get the phone onto my companies MDM platform, which I am putting on using the method of entering an afw# code on the account sign in screen. However, the sign in screen is behind the update screen and I can't skip the update during the set up process, as far as I know. Is there any method of skipping the update screen and going to the sign in screen so the MDM can be configured? I don't "need" the phone to be updated for it to go on the MDM, it'll work just fine with an Android 8 phone.

  • Perform the set-up without sim card and do not configure Wifi. No network means no possibility to update. After the wizard has completed manually set-up the options you want/need. – Robert Oct 24 '19 at 15:27
  • @Robert The problem is that the MDM has to go on during the set up phase, if I put it on after that it's not set up correctly. – SGR Oct 24 '19 at 15:32
  • The use a local Wifi router. Power off the Wifi router (or disable the Wifi) when Android is searching for updates and later re-enable it. Or move into and out of the reception range of the Wifi. – Robert Oct 24 '19 at 17:41
