I wish to stream media files stored in my PC on my Android device.

  • I tried starting a DLNA server on windows 7 laptop with help of both in-built feature and a software called SimpleDLNA server, both of which immediately showed up on iOS VLC media player's network tab, but neither of those ever showed up in the network shares tab in vlc media player of my android device.

The fact that it shows up in iOS device VLC player, so most likely there is no problem on the server side.

  • Also before attempting this ,I had earlier created a DLNA server using "servers ultimate pro" app on an android device(galaxy grand),and my samsung NOTE-5 was able to detect that server (it shows my other android device and has uPnP logo next to it) immediately and could stream files successfully, and it also showed up on my iPad.

I guess this shows that there is nothing wrong with samsung note-5

Details of android device in question

Samsung NOTE 5 32gb

Model No: N920G

OS- 7 (Nougat)

Details of Laptop in question

Model -LENOVO G470 Processor -intel i3 2nd gen(i3-2310M @ 2.1 GHz) 2 core Ram- 6Gb (samsung and Ramaxcel) OS- Windows 7 x64 Home basic SP1

as some have suggested , i don't think it has anything to with server specs, as mentioned earlier samsung galaxy grand (my 1st server) with 1GHZ processor and 800 mb ram , it could handle 1080p video streams smoothly

Link to software -https://nmaier.github.io/simpleDLNA/

And there no home group feature for home basic users , and i'm able to access public folder of laptop on my iPad VLC

Attempts to solve the issue

  1. I tried downloading beta version(3.3.0 RC_4-13,arm64-v8a) and an older version of VLC(3.1.0,arm64-v8a) on my android device.

  2. I have tried Downloading

  • Server side

  • Plex media server

  • serviio pro

  • UMS (universal media server)

  • VLC streamer

  • client side(galaxy ntoe-5)

    • serviio
    • Bubble uPnP
    • MX player
    • DMS explorer -Plex Media server(same account logged in on both server and client)
  1. I tried using another android device (Lenovo Zuk Z2 pro)

It didn't show any variation in any of the above method w.r.t previous result, i.e results were same.

Note:I also tried installing Bubble uPnp server on windows, but my antivirus keeps flagging it as PDM:Trojan.Win32.Generic, I don't feel it's safe to proceed ahead anyway.

It's difficult for me to diagnose the problem cuz of the situation, Pl help me out to resolve this issue.

  • I've done it before using VLC in Windows and a separate VLC app (not the main one) in the android phone. What it does is it basically streams audio and video of the windows' VLC to the phone's app. Limitation - video plays in both, audio plays in phone. For now, have you tried these solutions? • Windows home basic doesn't have home group feature as described in 2nd link and i don't observe any network share tab when I right click on files. But i can access files in public folders in my iPad VLC

  • Can you list out the full specs of your PC as what I've found indicates a low end laptop (2GB of RAM) which would explain why Plex was too heavy for you. Also have you check other Android DLNA clients in Izzy's lists Sep 28 '20 at 6:26
  • 6GB ram, i3 2nd gen with 1.5gb intel graphics
