On Sunday, 13th September 2020, the battery of my Motorola Moto G5 broke down and I ordered a new one. Yesterday, on Friday, 18th September 2020, it finally arrived and everything worked just fine. WhatsApp was able to link contacts’ names to their respective numbers after I imported a VCF backup file (see link).

Later that day, however, WhatsApp suddenly did not recognise my contacts anymore although it has the permission to go through them. So, I stumbled upon WhatsApp FAQs, namely “Seeing numbers instead of contacts’ names”. There it says that I should do the following:

  1. Open your phone’s Settings, then tap Users & accounts > WhatsApp.
  2. Tap REMOVE ACCOUNT > REMOVE ACCOUNT.
  3. Open WhatsApp, then tap the new chat icon > More options > Refresh.

When I tap REMOVE ACCOUNT, I get a warning that says that this will delete all my messages, contacts and other data from my phone. What does this mean? This does not sound like a good solution.
