My concern is with buying Chinese made smartphones because I've red articles that say spyware has been found preinstalled on some Chinese made devices. Do you think that rooting and flashing those devices will render them safe?

Also, those are not "auto-generated articles". It has been well established that some models of well-known Chinese based brands contain censorship and data collecting capabilities bundled.

  • What do you mean by re-flashing? Flashing an original ROM from the manufacturer? Or some customROM? If you flash something from the manufacturer why should this change something. And a customROM may be even worse, it just depends on who has developed the ROM.

There are some open source ROM projects like LineageOS which have IMHO a high "trust rating". But you have to be aware that unlocking and installing a customROM will block a lot of apps that refuse to run on rooted devices. Banking apps, games an much more. Android experienced people may be able to make some of those apps work again but it can get complicated up to impossible. If you just consider buying may be you should switch to a different brand.

  • Yeah, but I want to get into custom ROMs anyway, I just wander if it's a good choice of a cheap phone.

most of that articles are auto-generated and therefore not a good indicator. there are some devices with non-unlockable bootloader out there even if unlocking guide exist (oppo a9 for example) better read in fora like forum.xda-developers.com
