The **'insufficient memory'** error often occurs in connection with data sync or app installs when your device is running low on *internal* storage (i.e. phone, not the internal SD card).

HTC Desire low on internal storage, I'm clueless -- Any help?
I also have a Desire, with similar issues as you do, despite having moved all possible applications to the SD card (and I haven't even installed all that much in the first place).
