Magisk: Failed to patch: Unsupported image format
The factory images are provided by Google in ZIP format. You have to unzip it, select the boot image, and then apply the Magisk patch.

Undoing MagiskHide or updating magisk without the GUI (perhaps by using magisk --install-module)?
So, it transpired that MagiskHide had successfully hidden Magisk from itself. I:
Logged in via adb shell and got root
Ran magiskhide disable
Uninstalled the stub app shown below

Magisk 25+ on a custom ROM: ramdisk + vbmeta, but no boot.img
Here is what I did that worked.
Install TWRP
Download payload-dumper-go
Run go build
For your lineage or lineage-microG distribution which is a .zip, run unzip MyDownloadedImage.zip
