MHL is a new wire protocol, using very clever signalling technology to use very few wires to transmit a lot of data: 1080p video, 7.1 channel surround sound, and RCP remote control data. MHL also uses the existing power lines on USB to allow the TV to power the connected device. When connected to an MHL display, the display controller on the phone speaks ...

To use the MHL output of the phone (using micro USB connector) you need to either have a device (such as a TV) that supports MHL directly, or use a dongle to convert MHL to some other standard (such as HDMI, VGA or Composite) that you can use with your device. This is done entirely in the dongle. So as long as your device outputs MHL and you have the dongle, ...

If you're rooted you could try to force a certain combination of phone screen resolution and DPI using Second Screen and maybe your selected video player will conform to that even as the video is being streamed out through MHL. Just make sure you keep failsafe options like "don't keep settings after restart" enabled in case your experimental Second Screen ...

Samsung has two types of MHL cable: an 11-pin one for their more recent phones, and a 5-pin one for their older phones. The 5-pin one is standard and will work on non-Samsung phones. The 11-pin one only works on newer Samsung phones. Third-party manufacturers tend to also sell both kinds, so look at which phones the cable says it is for. If it says it's for ...

On my Note3 running Lollipop I was able to check for supported external resolutions by running ( via a terminal app or adb shell ) >dmesg and ( filtering with grep ) looking for the lines: <6>[ 581.051746] hdmi_edid_add_sink_video_format: EDID: format: 1 [640x480 p60 4/3], Supported <6>[ 581.051756] hdmi_edid_add_sink_video_format: EDID: ...

That idea of adding another converter and going digital-to-analog seems to be one of the ways of getting this kind of setup to work. I added a simple passive DVI-to-HDMI adapter after the above MHL converter (e.g. http://naplestech.com/images/dvi-to-hdmi-adapter.jpg) and then continued with an active HDMI-to-VGA converter, namely this: http://www.sandberg.it/...

There are a number of devices similar to ChromeCast which plug into the TV's HDMI port and accept wifi streaming from computers/phones/tablets. Some are quite inexpensive, and a few incorporate a full media computer running either Windows or Linux. Any of these will let you stream media to any HD TV, even a first year model. If necessary, you could also ...

Well if the already build adapter doesn't work you can make your own folowing this steps (if you are not able to do all the soldering ask a professional nearby like a phone repair shop) : Background : Samsung made the new 11pin MHL technology on the galaxy note 2 and the S3 (those are the first devices to have it any top shelf phone out after that day have ...

Generally its better to get one that matches the brand. However it is the same technology so it MAY work. Ask about the return policy to make sure you can return it in case it doesn't work. You should be fine, though I cant say with 100% certainty.

As András' comment says, the Nexus 4 uses Slimport not MHL. I use this Slimport adaptor to connect my N4 to a TV.

If your HTC phone has OTG support. You can use one of these USB OTG adapters. Then you can plug your 70D using a mini USB cable and then plug it in to the OTG cable and plug it into your phone. Then you can download an app such as DSLR Controller and you should see live feed of your 70D on the phone.
